Do You Know These 5 Facts About Air Conditioning?Have you ever wondered how your air conditioner keeps your home nice and cool? Air conditioning uses principles developed more than 100 years ago. The following are five facts you may not have known about your cooling system.

Heat Movers

Air conditioners don’t make cool air in the same way a furnace makes heat. Air conditioners use refrigerant to remove heat from warm return airflow. It may seem like splitting hairs, but it’s an important detail to know in order to understand basic air conditioning operation.

Regular Maintenance

Air conditioners have electrical, plumbing and mechanical components that need to be inspected each year for function, wear and cleanliness. Professional preventive maintenance pays for itself through lower cooling bills, longer system life span and catching small problems before they become substantial repair jobs.

Reduce Humidity

Along with providing cool air, air conditioners also help dehumidify indoor air. Moisture in warm return airflow condenses on the cold evaporator, much like water condensate forms on a glass of cold lemonade. The cleaner the evaporator coil, the more efficiently the air conditioner can cool and dehumidify your home.

Relationship With Air Ducts

The ducts should be inspected  by your HVAC technician. Leaky and disconnected ducts can be sealed with foil tape and mastic. Fiberglass, spray-in foam or rigid fiber board should be applied to ducts in unconditioned spaces.

Bigger Isn’t Always Better

When it’s time to replace your old air conditioner, it’s essential that your HVAC comfort consultant performs a load calculation of your home to determine the correct size needed. Don’t go by the size of your old air conditioning system. It may not be the exact size your home’s cooling load requires, reducing efficiency and comfort.
